Something Finnish 6: light up

Here's a candle holder which was a gift from hmmm.. can't seem to remember who. :(
The roots of Iittala date back to 1881 when a glass factory was established in a small village by the name of Iittala in southern Finland.

Iittala’s breakthrough occurred in the early years of modernism and functionalism in the 1920s and 30s. It was among the first companies to make the transition from creating decorative settings and dinner sets to progressive Scandinavian design. Iittala’s designers included the modernist trailblazers, Kaj Franck, Alvar Aalto and his wife Aino.

Sad to say, the response has been quite lukewarm for the bits and pieces quiz. Is it hard, uninteresting or no time? Your feedback is apprecitated. Thank you!

Something Finnish 5:comfy

Finlayson has a rich heritage of manufacturing quality textiles since 1820. Even today, Finlayson Oy textiles and Familon bed concepts add a touch of luxury to private homes and public premises.
First Finlayson factory located in Tampere, check the photo in my summer finland blog.

Something Finnish 4: yummy

One of my favorite Finnish chocolate is Fazer's dark chocolate with 70% cocoa. Oy Karl Fazer Ab is a family business founded by Karl Fazer in 1891. The French-Russian café has grown into an international group of companies.

Something Finnish 3: somewhere to travel

Play and Win Bits and Pieces Quiz.

This is the electronic travel card for travel on buses, trains, metros and trams. It is a fixed price and is not dependent on the distance travelled. The fare is 1.80€ per trip for travel within Helsinki and Espoo. It is 2.07€ in Vantaa. When travelling from one region to another(regional fare), e.g. Vantaa to Helsinki, it is a fixed price of 3.10€ per trip.
The above are adult prices and monthly fare uploads are possible on the cards as well. For example, a month's internal fare is around 40€ and for regional is 79€.

Something Finnish 1: something fishy

This item kinda looked rather fishy, the first time i saw it. In all my years living in this world (which is more than 2 decades), I've never come across a can opener like this. It seems it is a finnish design. It might be small but it works as efficiently as the other convenential can openers.
Play my Bits and Pieces Quiz, and win yourself something finnish but not maybe not this 'fishy' item. ;-)

Bits and Pieces Quiz 1

Vantaa Daily Photo's first ever quiz with 'prizes'. The prizes will be postcards and a grand prize, 'something finnish'.

Here are the rules: Simply guess the photos(the blog posts) the tiny cropped up pieces belong to. When giving the answer, give the title and date of the blog corresponding to the correct Piece number. Please give all the answers in one post. No multiple enteries, have to be fair for everyone. Closing date of the quiz is Dec 1st, Friday.

Winners: You'll receive a postcard from me as long as you get FOUR of them right. . And if you manage to get all SIX correct, you receive more than a postcard. IT's a surprise! ;-)

Main idea is to have fun playing the matching game. In the event, that no one is able to get four right, I'll just have a top 5. So make your guesses even if it happens to be only one.

ANSWERS to be revealed on 2nd December. Happy guessing! Hope you have some fun with it.

Untitled sculpture

No, it is not snowing again. This was taken last week when it snowed. There wasn't any name to this sculpture. Anyone can suggest a name while i try to find more details about it... This is found near Vantaa City Hall in Tikkurila.

Recycle 5

This is the last in the series of recycling photos for now. ;-) This clothes recycling bin found next to the glass recycling bins. People are advised to pack the clothes properly in plastic bags before depositing them here. VAATE-KERÄYS = CLOTH COLLECTION

Vandals have hit this as well. 'Moi' is a finnish greeting for Hi.

Recycle 4

This glass recycling bins are found near the Martinlaaskso bus station. The one with the green label is for coloured glass and the other is for transparent ones. Usually there are cash refunds for beer bottles but not for other liqour bottles.

Recycle 3

This is found on the door. The names on the coloured background are in Finnish. The Mixed Waste is collected on Tuesdays and Fridays. Biowaste is on Mondays, Household paper on Thursdays and Mixed fibre packaging is also on Thursdays. Besides these bins, there are other kinds of recycling.
No place for glass and cans in this place. They are found elsewhere in the open.

Recycle 2

The green one's for newspaper and magazines. The other's for cardboard. Besides the three already managed, there are grey ones for general rubbish. Why i mention the colours. Find out tomorrow.

Recycling seems to be the way of life in most parts of Europe. Sad to say, my home country has a lot more to do in recycling.

Recycle 1

The 'shed' in the previous post is the place to dump rubbish and also for recycling. Got this idea to do a series on the many ways people in Finland recycle from keropokman's blog. The bins are colour coded for different types of rubbish. This one's for bio-degradable stuff. It's mainly for left-overs and the phrase 'Takaisin luontoon' means 'Back to nature.'
How active is recycling in your cities?

Important 'Shed'

This building is needed in every housing estate. It is an important structure and apartments would start to smell if this is missing. More on it tomorrow.

Birdhouse?

Found this 'birdhouse' on a tree near my place. Not sure who put it there or for what.

Train doorway

This was one of my options for the doorway theme day. The dog sign means that dogs are allowed in this carriage. The sign beside the No Smoking sign means that tickets are not sold in this carriage. Most of the train travel is done by travel cards but there is still a conductor who sells tickets in certain carriages.

100th Post: Apple tree again

This is my 100th post. Never thought I'll survive this long. It has been great doing Vantaa DP and it is especially made more meaningful and interesting due to the support from the DP family. :-)

Why the apple tree cos my first post was on apples. Thought I go back to the beginning, the apple tree that started it all. The same apple tree now in winter.

Here's how I got to join the DP trail. I followed a link from the google group page to a new site I Dressed Myself. From this page, I linked to Tanty's Stavanger Daily Photo. Her DP was interesting and informative. At that time the only Finnish site was Oulu. So I decided to try my hand at Vantaa. For Singapore, there was only Raymond. Now there is Helsinki and 2 more sites for Singapore:Keropokman and Zannie
Thanx to Eric of Paris DP for starting this daily photo series.

There are a lot of grill places like this all over Finland. They usually sell burgers and fries. Sometimes also kebab and pizzas.

Ghost at Myyrmanni?

Took this shot because of the advertisment for the cable channels. It has Ronaldinho one side and I'm not sure who's on the other side. It was an eye catching ad. Someone jus walked past as I was taking the shot, hence the ghostly figure on the left hand corner. Here's a clearer view.
The Myyrmanni Shopping Centre is in Myyrmäki. Read more in my previous post about the bombing that happened that here in 2002.

Vantaa DP in Snow..

Took this shot yesterday morning at the train station. The bench was covered with snow. So white, uniform and undisturbed. Well, you can see what I did. ;-) The idea jus came to my mind and I had a couple of minutes before the train arrived to get this done.

DP Theme Day: Something that is about to disappear soon

31 October '06
Hi all,
How have you all been? I'm fine. I'm Maple and I think it has been 2 months since I last wrote. I've especially asked to write for this DP theme day: Something that is about to disappear soon. I feel honoured to have my letter published as this theme day is a DP family event that happens monthly on the first of the month.

Well, I have enclosed a current picture of myself and as you can see I have shed all me leaves except for a handful. It is only a matter of days before all the remaining leaves disappear. Well that is my life and it is time for me to rest.
I'm not saddened by the bare look that is upon me because I'll have snowflakes adorning me thereafter.

I'll keep my letter short as I was told that there will be other blogsites participating in this theme day. Make sure to visit all and have a look at the things that are to disappear soon. Will keep in touch
Yours sincerely
Maple
Previous Letter from Maple

p.s. This was taken at 7am yesterday(31.10) It started to snow later in the day.
